Safety In A Covid-19 World

April 21st, 2020
What is the definition of safety? Merriam-Webster defines safety when used as a noun to mean "the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss" or "a device (as on a weapon or a machine) designed to prevent inadvertent or hazardous operation". The same prestigious group defines safety as a verb to mean "to protect against failure, breakage, or accident"

Safety has always been pretty straightforward to me during my career (over 20 years) in the industry. Recognize and define hazards. Provide protection to the human element (workers, pedestrians, etc) from defined hazards through engineering, behavior, and protective equipment. I have always been confident in providing answers for all hazards--at work, at home, in the street--and have taken great pride in what Verona Safety is able to provide it's customers. I do not have an answer to provide safety, as it is defined above, in the environment we currently face against COVID-19.

It would seem that wearing PPE (masks, gloves, eye protection) in public would provide an answer to the issues we face. But, in doing so, what equipment are we taking away from the front line workers that need it most with the current PPE shortage we are facing. And, cross contamination, proper donning & fit and disposal must be learned and followed 100% of the time for maximum effectiveness. Real lasting change in the behavior of our nation would take months or years.

Staying home and limiting contact seems like the ultimate way to suppress the virus. In doing so, we risk real financial damage to our way of life and potential anarchist behavior from some in our society that could be irreparable. Going back to "normal" too soon could be like taking the parachute off half way through the "jump". What happens when we hit the ground?

So, for the first time in many years, I don't have the answer to mitigate the current hazards we face. I won't believe anyone that claims to have that answer. I do know we need to intelligently communicate on a local and national level to create a plan that will have the least amount of overall impact understanding that we will not get through this unscathed. I pray and hope daily that our leaders will let go of their egos, even if only for a few days, and work towards this goal.

In the interim, I will focus on what I can control and lead those in my immediate circle. That includes my family, friends, employees of Verona Safety and the customers that we have worked with for the past 18+ years to help mitigate their hazards. Providing protection for COVID-19 has become a priority but we cannot look away from the hazards we continue to face in our normal course of work. Falls still kill at a greater rate than COVID. Electrical hazards, traffic exposure and other hazards will not sleep during this crisis.

As a buyer of safety products I have never seen more profiteering and counterfeiting that the past eight weeks. Customers need to work with suppliers they trust and know that we are doing everything we can to wade through the unpleasantness in the current market. Make no mistake, it will be volatile over the next year and certain product availability will be limited and at a much higher cost. We will continue the work to provide safety products for you and your employees at the most effective cost we can. At work and in your home. Godspeed to all for sustained health and the continued ability to make sane decisions as our government wades through this time in our lives!
